This was Virtual Home Design’s first Passive House or ‘Passivhaus’ project. This home was carefully designed to deliver exceptional comfort, energy efficiency and building performance for the life of the home.

The design incorporates the core principles of Passivhaus construction, including high levels of thermal insulation, high-performance triple-glazed windows, a heat recovery mechanical ventilation system, an airtight building envelope, and construction detailing that minimises thermal bridging. Together, these elements create a healthier, more stable indoor environment with greatly reduced heating and cooling demands.

Importantly, the project was also conceived to demonstrate that high-performance homes need not be limited to contemporary forms or slab-on-ground construction. With its traditional façade and elevated subfloor system, the home challenges common assumptions about Passivhaus design and shows that this rigorous performance standard can be successfully achieved within a more familiar and traditional architectural language.
